BUET
Alumni Association (BUETAA) Formally Inaugurated
BUETAA was formally inaugurated in a ceremony
held in the evening of 28 July 2007 at the BUET Seminar
Hall. The activity was organized in cooperation with BUET
authorities and in conjunction with the celebration of 60
Years of Engineering Education in Bangladesh which had its
inaugural program the same morning. The Ahsanullah
Engineering College, the first institution of higher
education in engineering in Bangladesh, was established in
1947.
In the inaugural ceremony, BUETAA presented
Professor Wahiduddin Ahmed, former Vice Chancellor of BUET
and Chief Guest of the event, with a Plaque of Honor for his
outstanding contributions to engineering education in
Bangladesh during his long professional career. The ceremony
was chaired by Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice
Chancellor of BRAC University, who is the President of
BUETAA. Professor A.M. M. Safiullah, Vice Chancellor of BUET,
attended the program. In his welcoming speech, the BUETAA
President gave a brief historical background of the
formation of BUETAA and invited all alumni to join and make
it a successful umbrella organization of graduates of BUET
and its predecessor institutions of higher learning.
Expressing his satisfaction at the formation of BUETAA,
Professor Safiullah spoke of the many useful activities that
the Association can perform for the benefit of the
university and its students and faculty. After the citation
for the Plaque of Honor was read by Dr. Sadiqul Islam
Bhuiyan, Executive Director of BUETAA, and the plaque
formally awarded to him by the BUETAA President, Professor
Wahiduddin Ahmed gave his response. In his characteristic
humility, he expressed deep appreciation to all present for
giving him the great honor but expressed doubt that he was
not worthy of this honor. He lauded the efforts that has
culminated to the formation of the BUET Alumni Association
and cited examples of how alumni associations of various
reputed universities around the world have been rendering
critically important services to their alma maters as well
as their alumni. He wished great success of BUETAA. He also
signed a copy of the Application Form to become a member of
BUETAA.
About 250
invited alumni from BUET faculty, professionals of the
government and the private sectors, and the members of
BUETAA’s Board of Trustees attended the ceremony. Present
were also three alumni of the first batch of graduates
(1951) of the Ahsanullah Engineering College. The
participants attended a dinner organized by BUETAA at the
end of the program.
