A Historical Perspective

The Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET) is the oldest institution in Bangladesh for the study of Engineering and Architecture. Its history dates back to 1876 when Dhaka Survey School (DSS) was founded at Nalgola, Dhaka, to train Surveyors for the then Government of Bengal of British India. Time has witnessed the transformation of DSS into Ahsanullah School of Engineering (ASE) offering three-year diploma courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

In 1948, ASE was upgraded to Ahsanullah Engineering College (AEC) as the Faculty of Engineering under the University of Dhaka offering four-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering. AEC followed a glorious path of development  - it was upgraded to the status of a university, East Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology (EPUET) in 1962. EPUET was named   Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology or BUET in 1971 when Bangladesh became an independent country.

BUET now offers undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in 12 engineering and architecture disciplines, and post-graduate degrees in four other related disciplines. Today BUET can take pride in the fact that its graduates have, for many years, been in the forefront in shaping the future of our beloved country, Bangladesh. Over and above, more and more BUET alumni are contributing to the development of  the various sectors of the economies of a large number of countries in the west and the middle-east of which they are residents or citizens.

Alumni of most well-recognized universities in developed countries and many in developing countries are known to play highly useful roles in the various aspects of their alma mater. In India, the alumni associations of most of the IIT's have made tremendous contributions to furthering the programs of the Institutes and to enhancing their images home and abroad. The need for forming an alumni association of BUET was felt by many for a long time. But for a variety of reasons this idea did not materialize earlier.
